Flesh footed shearwater

Puffinus carneipes

Has pink (flesh-coloured) feet - its head, body and wings are black

Often seen around boats and fishing vessels offshore, looking for food

Feeds on fish, squid and crustaceans

Breeds on islands around the North Island and Cook Strait (and some islands in the Pacific and Indian Oceans) from December to May

Migrates to the northern Pacific Ocean from May to September

NZ Conservation Status Declining

Birds from colonies in Western Australia migrate to the Gulf of Oman for the winter. Birds from Lord Howe Island migrate to the Sea of Japan and New Zealand birds also migrate to the Northern Hemisphere.

Flesh-footed shearwaters are easily confused with the black petrel and the Westland petrel, but are smaller and less bulky, and have characteristic pink feet.
