Our Training and Education Initiatives
Skipper Exchanges
New Zealand is the seabird capital of the world but while lots of species breed here they live much of their lives elsewhere. It’s important therefore that New Zealand fishermen work with their counterparts in other parts of the world where the seabirds go.
Skipper exchanges are one way of achieving that, providing an opportunity to share experiences, learn firsthand from others and raise awareness about seabird by-catch and mitigation techniques.
Workshops
Workshops are another way that we are able to bring fishermen, scientists, government officials, observers, environmentalisists and others together to look at ways to reduce seabird by-catch in various fisheries.
We have held a workshop in various locations around New Zealand. In years past we have had international guests and speakers from Argentina, Uruguay, Australia, Australia, the United States and elsewhere to discuss issues being faced in their own countries.
