Seabirds face a number of threats at sea including interactions with fisheries, pollution and prey depletion to name just a few. They also often face additional pressures at their breeding colonies.

Individuals, organisations and governments around the world are working to protect seabirds.  One way that you can make a difference is by observing all mitigation measures, voluntarily adopting codes of practice, and adopting best practice ways of fishing within the fisheries that you operate within.

If you have ideas for additional mitigation measures consider entering it into WWF's Smart Gear competition.

You may also want to join others at one of Southern Seabird Solutions' workshops or portside events to find out more about mitigation efforts within your fishery and to share your experiences.

"The premise of Southern Seabird Solutions is that fishermen themselves hold the key to solving the issue of seabird mortalities during fishing.  To that end, we undertake projects that facilitate the transfer of knowledge, technology and skills between fishermen." Janice Molloy, Convenor
One way everyone can get involved in protecting our seabirds is by observing the New Zealand Environmental Care Code and New Zealand Water Care Code.
