Seabirds face a number of threats at sea including interactions with fisheries, pollution and prey depletion to name just a few. They also often face additional pressures at their breeding colonies.
Individuals, organisations and governments around the world are working to protect seabirds. One way that you can make a difference is by observing all mitigation measures, voluntarily adopting codes of practice, and adopting best practice ways of fishing within the fisheries that you operate within.
We are interested in working with both recreational and commercial fishers, so get in touch by email to info@southernseabirds.org
If you have ideas for additional mitigation measures consider looking at our International Mitgation Mentoring Programme or Mitigation Development Pathway. You may even wish to enter WWF's Smart Gear competition.
Watch our website for developing projects including one aimed at helping recreational fishers avoid seabird captures, our Seabird Smart Training Programme for commercial fishers or perhaps you'd be interested in supporting our Strengthening the Trust project that will communicate key seabird smart messages to a wide audience.
"The premise of Southern Seabird Solutions is that fishermen themselves hold the key to solving the issue of seabird mortalities during fishing. To that end, we undertake projects that facilitate the transfer of knowledge, technology and skills between fishermen." Janice Molloy, Convenor
