Training and education are at the heart of the Southern Seabird Solutions’ philosophy. Educating fishermen about seabird by-catch, sharing knowledge and solutions between them, empowering and motivating them to fish in a ‘seabird smart’ manner. This is how we will resolve this global issue.
 
In New Zealand, the Seafood Industry Training Organisation (SITO) has a unit standard specifically to raise awareness amongst fishing recruits about seabirds and mitigation methods.

A number of Southern Seabird Solutions initiatives also have a training and education component, including our annual workshops for fishers and other stakeholders.

There are also overseas education and training opportunities for New Zealanders to take advantage of that will help reduce the accidental capture of seabirds during commercial fishing operations.
