International recognition for New Zealand fisher
Kiwi fisher Dave Kellian was one of sixteen finalists honoured at the Seaweb Seafood Summit in New Orleans recently for his work promoting seafood sustainability.05.03.2015
The Seafood Champion Awards Ceremony was held before hundreds of the world's leading voices on sustainable seafood during the opening reception of the summit.
In the 1990s, Dave became concerned about seabird deaths in fishing, and developed two different devices that set baited hooks underwater, out of reach of seabirds. Dave has put his fishing career on hold twice to work as a liaison officer to spread 'seabird smart' fishing practices amongst his fishing peers in New Zealand, and abroad. Dave has recently been selected by conservation and fishing bodies to help create a marine spatial plan for the Hauraki Gulf, and in 2004 Dave won a New Zealand Green Ribbon Award for his conservation efforts.
These Seafood Champions are looking beyond the status quo in best practices and responsible sourcing, and are addressing seafood sustainability in the context of ecological, human rights, and community needs," said Dawn M. Martin, president of SeaWeb. "That kind of drive, passion and creativity will pave the path to a healthy future for this economically and environmentally important resource and the rest of us who depend upon the ocean as part of our daily lives."
