Our story

Southern Seabird Solutions was formed in July 2002 at a workshop of industry, environmental and government interests in Nelson, New Zealand. All parties present wanted the same outcome - the widespread use of responsible fishing practices. So a group was formed to develop cooperative international projects as well as to continue improving our standards in New Zealand.

In November 2003 we made the transition from an informal alliance into a registered charitable trust.

In 2012, our 10th anniversary coincided with the Diamond Jubilee royal visit to New Zealand. Our Seabird Smart Award recipients met the Prince of Wales at a special event in Wellington, organised to announce His Royal Highness as the Patron of Southern Seabird Solutions Trust.
